Intermezzo's Summer concert

Intermezzo concert poster summer 2024

We're delighted to have begun rehearsals for our concert on 14th September titled "In the silence of the night". The programme will include works relating to night and silence including a dramatic opening by Augustinas (text from Psalm 139: yea the darkness hideth not...), the atmospheric Dum medium silentium by fellow Lithuanian Miškinis, music set in the night-time by Latvians Ēriks Ešenvalds and Laura Jēkabsone, and a lovely song about wishing on a falling star by Swedish composer Emil Sundberg.

Away from Scandinavia and the Baltic states, we have two pieces by Eric Whitacre including a complete reimagining of Depeche Mode's Enjoy the Silence, haunting arrangements of an old English folk song by Kerry Andrew and a modern one by Jim Clements, a classic version of All Through the Night, South African Peter Klatzow's Night Silence, and a new arrangement, also from South Africa, to test the choir's mettle!

Tickets are on sale now. If you would like reserved seats for the concert, consider becoming a friend of Intermezzo to support the work of the choir.

Coming soon: Intermezzo sings "Songs of Love"

Intermezzo concert poster easter 2024

Intermezzo's concert at Easter 2024 took place on Saturday 20th April in SJE Arts. The title was "Songs of Love", with music related to all aspects of love: love of God, love for one's mother, romantic love, love spurned, even twisted and obsessive love.

Works included Jake Runstad's lovely Let My Love Be Heard, Eric Whitacre's passionate With a Lily in Your Hand, three of Cyrillus Kreek's Psalms of Love, and works by composers new to us: Eleanor Daley, Ambrož Čopi, Paul Sjolund, and an irresistible Haitian piece by Sten Källman that got everybody dancing.

Hear Intermezzo at Christmas!

Thank you to everyone who came to our summer concert on 9th September in SJE Arts!

The programme featured music with a connection to "mother, father, and child". It included the dramatic Which Was the Son Of... by Arvo Pärt, and When David Heard by Eric Whitacre, as well as less well-known mysterious works by Rihards Dubra and Vytautas Miškinis. Also featured was the lovely And the swallow by young American composer Caroline Shaw, and works by Nigel Short, Laura Jēkabsone, and some American pieces from the spiritual or gospel tradition. Our performance included, of course, some music in Finnish and Latvian.

If you enjoy our work, consider supporting out committed performances of both well- and lesser-known chamber choir music, as well as getting access to reserved seats, by joining the Friends of Intermezzo.

Previous concert: Spring 2023

Intermezzo concert poster spring 2023

Intermezzo's last concert took place on Saturday 13th May, in SJE Arts. The concert featured music with an African connection, including works by classical African composers, an exquisite new setting of a traditional African song, and South African popular music from the 1960s and 1980s adapted for chamber choir. The pieces share themes of joyfulness and integration: black with white, indigenous African with classical style, and choir with special guest marimba! We also included an English composer setting a Caribbean poem about African rituals, and modern versions of African-American spirituals. Some of the pieces had been given to us directly by the composers, so this was a concert programme that you couldn't hear anywhere else.
